Jersey Docker

The Docker, a life size bronze figure by sculptor Colin Miller is a tribute to Jersey's maritime heritage and to the time when the sea front was much closer to the Jersey Museum site than it is today. Colin Miller a well known English sculptor used to spend his childhood holidays at his Grandparents house Les Vaux, Rozel.

The bronze Docker is a powerful expression of the maritime life of those days when they would sail as far as Nova Scotia in search of cod. With no mechanical winches in those days it was down to the strength of the Dockers to haul in the fishing boats. He wears an original Jersey seaman's sweater.

As the museum requested that the Docker figure be moved outside onto the pavement at the museum entrance, the original coir hawser wouldn't have been appropriate exposed to the elements as it would deteriorate quickly. The Bronze Docker was sent to a London foundry to have the hawser copied and cast into bronze.
